Alamo Sewage
|
The Sewer system is owned and operated by the Town of Alamo.
Today, the department services approximately 1,240 customers through an estimated 30 miles of sewer collection piping consisting of gravity type collection systems, and is divided naturally by terrain. Those that do not have a gravity system are serviced through homeowner pump systems that carry the wastewater to either a larger pump station or gravity line. The Town's wastewater collection system leads to the Town's Sewer Plant where the wastewater is treated and released to Buck Creek. We are regulated by the Tennessee Department of Environment (TDEC) Water Resources Division Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation - TN.gov and the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) US Environmental Protection Agency rules and regulations. The Cross Connections Program
|
The Cross Connection program helps the Town of Alamo to ensure safe water for all customers on our system by protecting the water distribution system from contamination through cross connections. By eliminating cross connections, we can assure all users of our distribution system the same protection and assurances of safe drinking water.
The Town of Alamo's drinking water consistently meets or exceeds all state and federal standards for safe drinking water. The City's water supply is sampled daily, per state and federal requirements to ensure the customers of Alamo Water always have a safe water supply. Information on Alamo's drinking water is published in our annual water quality report. These reports cover the previous year's sampling results. |
What is a cross connection?
A cross connection is any actual or potential connection between the public water supply and a source of possible contaminants. Such as a water hose in a swimming pool, like the above picture.
Why are cross connections problems?
Under normal conditions, water flows directly from the City's water main to your property. Water pressure can suddenly drop due to repairing water main breaks on the distribution system, or high water using when fighting fire. This can create a vacuum in the water system, drawing liquid from cross connections that are not protected into the water system. This reversal in the direction of normal flow of water in a piping system is called "backflow".
How do we prevent cross connections?
Cross connections can be protected by the use of a backflow preventer, which is an assembly that prevents contaminants from being drawn into the water distribution system. The City has adopted the International Plumbing Code, which requires that an approved backflow preventer be installed on all cross connections.
In the Town of Alamo, all lawn sprinkler systems are required to have a backflow prevention device installed to protect our water distribution system from contamination. The Cross Connection Control program also requires annual testing of all irrigation system backflow prevention devices to ensure safe water for our customers.
